How Saddle-Stitched Booklets Are Made
Saddle stitching gathers folded sheets and staples them through the centre fold. Because each folded sheet creates four pages, booklet page counts are commonly planned in multiples of four.

Pages are imposed onto larger sheets
The page order you see in the final booklet is rearranged for printing and folding. Customers should normally supply a standard page-by-page PDF rather than manually imposing printer spreads unless requested.

The cover can be the same or heavier stock
A self-cover booklet uses the same material throughout. A separate cover can use heavier paper or card for a more substantial finish.
Very thick booklets may need another binding
As page count increases, saddle stitch becomes less suitable because the fold and staple area becomes bulky. Discuss perfect binding or other methods for thicker publications.
Plan business print for repeated real-world use
Business print is often reordered, handed between staff and used under time pressure, so consistency matters. Confirm the finished dimensions, company details, contact information and any licence or serial information before the first production run, then keep an approved master PDF for reprints. Choose material and finishing based on how the item will be handled: a disposable form has different needs from a name card, sticker or catalogue cover. If several products belong to the same campaign, keep logos, colours, phone numbers and QR destinations consistent across them. For forms and pads, leave enough writing space; for promotional pieces, make the response action visually obvious.
What to send when requesting a quotation
For a useful quotation, send the finished size, paper or material, printing sides, quantity, finishing requirements, print-ready artwork if available, required date and delivery location. If any item is still undecided, explain how the printed piece will be used so a suitable specification can be suggested. For an urgent job, include the exact time by which the completed item must be collected or delivered. This avoids quoting a specification that cannot realistically meet the deadline.
